Coping With The Aftermath Of Sewage Damage

Some homeowners are fortunate enough not to encounter or experience any problem with regards to drainage system that can cause any sewage damage. But for many homeowners, sewage damage is something that happens once in a while. It can be a daunting task, but nevertheless a job you have to take or call a professional to work on.

Commonly caused by the poor sewage and drainage system in an area, wastewater backup can suddenly flood an area or entire space, causing serious sewage damage to floors and some of the appliances and furniture at home.

Before you could assess the extent of the sewage damage that the backup caused, you may need to manually remove the excess black water from the floor. After struggling with the murky waters from this flooding, you need to do a thorough checking for sewage damage and the subsequent cleaning of the tiles and flooring, the cabinets that are at floor level, and the appliances that were contaminated by the wastewater.

It may take the whole family to pitch in and do their part in taking care of sewage damage. If you cannot afford or do simply do not want to hire professionals anymore, just assign some family members to scrub and clean the kitchen floor, using every available cleaning tool at your disposal, while utilizing an array of detergents, bleach, disinfectant and even fabric softener to remove the stains from sewage damage. The floor, if properly tiled, will be considerably easier to clean up.

However, carpeted floors would pose a challenge. Carpeting would be contaminated, and even after a few days of drying using an industrial blower, you may not be able to restore the carpet back to its original state. You will have no choice but to cut out the contaminated part and throw it away or replace the entire carpeting.

The extent of the sewage damage won't be much since if surfaces affected are made from ceramic tiles. This would be a lot easier to clean and restore. Also check the appliances that were affected during the incident, perhaps the oven and a movable storage bin should be checked for sewage damage. Dismantle the lower sections of ovens to determine whether it has contamination or not and to see if there were any residue from the black water.

As a whole, it can be a very tiring experience. While you cannot do anything about the drainage system in your area, you can however schedule a regular checking of the wastewater reservoir in your place. This would prevent any overflow from occurring and consequently trigger you to call the local sewage company to come and pump out the accumulated wastewater in the reservoir.

In one way or another, an incident like this can also teach you to avoid ignoring regular checks of drainage and sewage systems. Cleaning up can be very tasking and having family members to help each other out can lessen the burden and will help everyone get back to normal living.
