The Mold Issue In Wet Carpet
Wet carpet can be difficult to clean. Washing, drying and cleaning them is a tedious process which can take a lot of effort and time on your part. To top it all there is the issue of mold. Wet carpets are ideal grounds for mold and mildew growth. So it's important that quick action is taken if you see signs of mold on your carpet.
Excess water due to leaking pipes in kitchen, overflowing toilets in the bathroom and poor drainage system can lead to your house being flooded. These in turn result in wet carpets. Any amount of moisture or dampness on your carpets will cause molds. So firstly you should fix the problem that causes your wet carpet.
If your carpets do get drenched, take immediate action to dry them as quickly as possible. If allowed to be soaked in water for more than 24 hours, carpets will generally start showing signs of mold growth.
If you see black spotting on your damp or wet carpet, it means that there are black mold spores growing on your carpet. A musty odor in your wet carpet is also a sign of mold growth.
Once you see signs of mold growth on your carpet, you can choose to throw away the wet carpet completely. However, just throwing away the wet carpet may not solve your mold problem. You will need to be very careful that you do not release the spores of the mold in the air. This can happen when you are in the process of removing your carpet.
Another choice is to use powerful cleaning products to kill the molds. Use anti-fungus cleaners or anti-microbial cleaning solutions to kill the mold enzymes. However, be careful while choosing the cleaner. You don't want to just remove the mold. You also want to make sure that it does not come back.
Most of the times when a normal liquid cleaner is used to brush off the mold from the wet carpet, it tends to come back. On the other hand, if the cleaner is too harsh, it will cause damage to your already damaged wet carpet. So make sure that the cleaner you choose is specially made for mold removal and yet is not so harsh that it damages your carpeting.
Once you have chosen the cleaner, pour the liquid cleaner on the molded area on the carpet. Use a soft brush to scrub it off. Once you are sure that the mold has been removed, rinse off the liquid cleaner thoroughly by using clean water.
Once the liquid cleaner has been rinsed off the carpet, allow it to dry. Direct sunlight is most suitable for drying the wet carpet. It will not only dry the carpet but will also prevent the mold from growing back again.
If it is not possible to take your carpet outdoors, then use a dehumidifier inside the house to reduce the humidity. Ideally the humidity should be less than 50%. Also use a fan. It will help in circulating the air and drying the carpet.
Allowing mold to grow in your carpet can be hazardous to your health. It can lead to allergies and infections, especially in people with poor immunity. So make sure that you do not provide an environment in your house for mold to grow and thrive.
