That Business Of Flood Damage Cleanup
After the floodwaters have subsided, what follows next is the grueling business of flood damage cleanup. It can really get on one's nerves especially if you have to deal with this several times, sometimes even more than once in a year. In my experience of having my home here in Houston, Texas, I had to deal with flood damage and flood damage cleanup during the last 3 years. Hence, I made it my goal to elevate my house as soon as I have the funds for it to avoid the same draining experience for long.
But for those who continue to experience flood damage and have to deal with flood damage cleanup, I would like to share with you a few tips that would help make the related tasks orderly and systematic.
Safety should always come first in every flood damage cleanup efforts. Remember not to enter your flood-damaged house until is has been deemed safe by proper authority. Wear protective gear such as boots, masks and gloves to protect yourself from having direct contact with possible bacteria-laden items. Upon entering your home, be sure to bring with you a camera to document the extent of damage done inside your home. This will help you when you make your report to your insurance company. You should thoroughly inspect your house as this will be the basis in coming up with your flood damage cleanup plan.
Now that you have fully inspected your house and have more or less assessed the damage done by the flood, you can then draft your flood damage cleanup plan. Your plan should include, among others, your priority areas, the flood damage cleanup process you are going to undertake and the timetable for these activities. Before you start any of your flood damage cleanup activities you should decide whether to hire a professional cleaning company or do it yourself. Hiring professional cleaners would prove to be expensive but there are instances when this becomes the best option. If you think you are capable to do it on your own, you should prepare for all the materials and equipment, if any, that would be needed.
Before starting your flood damage cleanup process, you should clear the area and decide which items to keep and which items to dispose. Do not keep flood damaged items piled up in your yard because it will pose a hazard. Burning should also be avoided as it will release mold spores into the air and may cause disease. After all furniture and other items are removed off the floors, the next thing to do is to remove standing water as it is a perfect breeding ground for molds and other fungi. Aside from the health risks, standing water also causes structural damage to your home. A sump pump may be used for water removal operations. It is worth an investment to acquire a sump pump especially if you live in flood-prone areas.
Flood damage cleanup activities should be thorough with special attention to dark niches and crevices for these areas are a good environment for molds, fungi and harmful bacteria to develop.
