You may have heard some buzz around about using a holistic approach to enhance your lifestyle and to lose weight. The truth is that a holistic approach to anything relating to people is a better approach. If you wonder what exactly it means to use this type of approach you are not alone.

I have received lots of emails with questions about this topic. Because my background is in nursing I am very familiar with a holistic approach. It simply means in basic terms that every aspect of your being will be taken into consideration.

The reason that is important is simple really; you body is made up of various systems that must work together seamlessly to keep you functioning at your optimum level. If there is a break down with any system the others are affected. Some to a lesser degree perhaps but nonetheless, all systems must work together.

So when you use a holistic approach to weight loss you will begin with a complete assessment of the situation. It is wise to find the cause of your weight gain. Seldom is it as simple as overeating. In many cases the overeating is a side effect of a greater problem such as anxiety or depression.

Many times a physical or medical issue is found to be responsible for the extra weight. Some medications cause a weight gain.

Of course it is possible that you do overeat and you do not exercise enough. But again, there may be reasons that you do not exercise. It could be due to a physical ailment or even because you do not get enough sleep. A lack of sleep can result in irritability and fatigue, which is likely to result in you being less than motivated to indulge in physical activities.

Most if not all of us have some emotional attachments to some foods. We may feel that when we watch TV we have to have chips and a soda, or we might believe that if we are not feeling well we need to eat a particular food. Understanding your personal attachments is a start to working to combat them.

Some of us always eat or snack as we are surfing the Internet. This is just one example of a simple problem that can be difficult to overcome. You may need to refine all of your eating to one room of the house.

The real point of a holistic approach is to consider all of you and not just the weight gain. That is the major difference in this approach and other types of programs. The focus remains on you and not the program. You will gradually incorporate healthy (healthier) habits into your lifestyle. The result will be a slimmer, trimmer and healthier you. Because it will be a lifestyle change the weight loss will be permanent. This really is the best way to promote good health and weight loss at the same time.
