Flood Damage Cleanup: Determine What Must Be Done First

If your home is in a flood zone it is likely you have experience damage at some point or another and may know very well what flood damage cleanup entails, but for those who weren't necessarily in an area expected to be hit it can be an overwhelming job to decide what needs to be done first. Whether your home is damaged for the first time or the fifth, it is devastating to return to what formerly was your comfort and pride and joy, only to find that everything has been damaged and it is your job to cleanup your own property.

There will be some form of help circulating through most flood damage cleanup areas, but for the most part you will have to do the bulk of the work for yourself. Neighbors may join together to get a community back in shape, but when everyone else has their own flood damage cleanup to undertake don't expect anyone else to be a constant source of help.

It is important to first look around and determine the extent to which your home has been damaged so you can list everything that needs done and come to some sort of priority ranking. Focusing on one job at a time may make the flood damage cleanup process feel a little less overwhelming when you are facing serious destruction to your property.

While you may be eager to get busy inside your home, it is important to clear outside areas that may need to be used during the flood damage cleanup process, such as roads, driveways, and any areas where you have animals outside such as a pasture. If you have a blocked road it will be difficult for you and your neighbors to get in and out to work and can also block relief agencies, volunteers, and emergency crews from easily accessing your home for assistance.

You may need to seek assistance or hire someone with larger equipment if you have large trees or other hard to remove debris lying across your property. If it is blocking a public road you can contact your city for removal, but expect this to take quite awhile since most of the streets will need to be cleared and resources will be stretched well beyond their limits. Even with a lot of volunteers, this process can sometimes take awhile.

There are also companies you can hire who will often help you determine if any of the trees down around your home can be salvaged, and can help you get rid of the rest. Burning debris is another option, but you need to check with local officials to make sure you don't need a permit for this.

Once you have done all you can to get the access roads to your home and crucial areas of your property clear, or are waiting for help with larger equipment to do so, you can finally turn your attention to flood damage cleanup inside your home. When looking inside the first concern should be the walls since they will take time to dry out and you can get that started while you worry about flood damage cleanup with carpets, furniture, and other valuable items.
