Are Elaborate Weddings A Thing Of The Past?
Everyone dreams of an expensive, extravagant wedding. The nicest food, the nicest band, beautiful decorations, and many friends and family members showing up to the event. Everyone wants to have the glass swan, and if your friend already had a glass swan, of course you will have to have the golden swan. But is all of this extravagance really worth it?
Some people want to have an elaborate wedding for themselves. Others feel the need to just to keep up with their friends. When this is the case, the only people that win are the wedding planners and wedding suppliers. As a group of people spend more and more money on weddings trying to outdo each other, the extravagance builds up. At some point, people insist on golden silverwear, and you have to wonder where the nuttiness all started.
This sort of keeping up with the Joneses attitude has become especially prevalent on the Bar Mitzvah circuit. This is because Jewish boys and girls in a given class all have their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs during the same school year. The parents of the kids with the later Bar or Bat Mitzvahs sometimes feel compelled to spend more to make their party seem different from all of the previous ones.
Since the world is going through an economic slowdown now, we have to expect that this sort of behavior is a thing of the past. Less credit, less need for superfluous spending, and more of a focus on down-to-earth needs.
Furthermore, with the average marriage ending in divorce nowadays, many wonder how much money they really want to spend on a ceremony that they may be repeating two or even three times. Sure, spending $25k once in your life may sound worthwhile, but if you get married twice, can you really imagine spending $50k on wedding ceremonies alone?
Another reason people may be more reluctant to spend money on weddings is that it is easier now to save money on weddings. For example, in the past, one would almost always have to buy a new wedding dress. If someone wanted to save money by buying a used one, she would need to hope someone she knew was similar to her in both size and style. Nowadays, all it takes is an eBay search to find dozens of beautiful used wedding dresses.
Also, using the power of the Internet and Google, you can do all sorts of things like create your own wedding invitations or comparison shop for wedding transportation.
Due to various societal trends, it seems that the days of the elaborate, expensive wedding may be over except for those that happen to be very financially well off. Between multiple marriages, the current global economic slowdown, and the ability to save money without sacrificing much quality, cheaper and more affordable wedding ceremonies seem to be the future.
