The second type of damage after fire is smoke because this will cause irritation to your respiratory system. It will produce toxic gases that can come from your household garbage, plastic, or even the leaves. These vapors and solid compounds will be suspended in the air for some time, and if you are in them for even a short time, they will start to make you experience some irritation to your eyes and nose. The longer you are in these vapors, the more likely you will start to have difficulty in breathing with coughing and headaches. If you already have some type of breathing problem, you will need to be very careful not to breathe these fumes if at all possible.

This smoke is not only bad for you but it will also do a lot of damage to your home as well. With a fire, the smoke will do just as much damage as the fire, if not more. The soot of a smoke will settle on your belongings and will cause it own style of damage. There are several types of smoke that will settle in your home and they are called wet, dry, protein, and fuel-oil. The differences in the style in which to clean up will be based on these styles.

If you have a wet smoke, it is more difficult to clean because it comes from a low heat fire. Dry smoke will come from a fast burning fire at high temperatures. A protein smoke is invisible, but it will cause your varnishes on your furniture to discolor and will leave a foul smell. A fuel-oil soot smoke is from your furnace malfunctioning.

As soon as you think you can get into a room of your home, you will want to try to open as many windows as you can and set up fans to help with the removal of this smoke. Always make sure that you cover your mouth and nose because you can still be affected by the leftover smoke. You will also want to try to brush off loose particles of this soot from your drapes, curtains, and upholstery. If you find open food packages, you will need to throw them away. Take your clothes to someone that can remove the smoke smell from them. Wipe off your kitchen and bathroom fixtures and put your pet some place clean.

The one thing that you don't want to do is clean or attempt to clean your walls or paintings because if you use the wrong techniques on these, you will do more damage than good. Don't use your electrical appliances until you get the okay and never turn on your ceiling fans until the water has been removed and the wiring has been checked because they might short circuit.
