Does Blu Ray DVD Mean Anything To You?
Some of you might be wondering what I am talking about and that in and of itself proves a point. First off Blu - Ray is a new hi definition dvd technology that was developed by Sony along with some other large companies like Pioneer.
Many months ago there was a another war happening in the world and that was a war between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Most of you probably have no clue the war existed, it was nothing like the Betamax VS VHS war of the 80's.
Basically Toshiba which developed the HD-DVD format and Blu-Ray again by Sony were both spending millions trying to win this format war. In the end unlike Betamax Sony actually won this time. The question is what did they win?
Well now that HD DVD doesn't exist anymore, if you want a full Hi Definition viewing capabilities you have to have a Blu-Ray player and next you need to rent or buy a Blu Ray disc. What does all of this cost? Well I forgot to mention that you need a Hi Definition TV and some special cables, component cables will work but you should probably spring for the more expensive HDMI cables. If you have the TV already this whole process is going to set you back at least 500 bucks. The Blu - Ray DVD's cost between $20 and $40 bucks a piece, so the initial cost is not all you need to think about.
The question is, how good is the picture and sound, will I really notice? Unless you're really into this sort of stuff the answer is maybe. For most of us the difference is there but isn't worth the money.
What if you have a Hi Definition TV and want to have a better DVD viewing experience but don't feel like spending all of this money. There is an alternative and it's cheaper, there are many companies building DVD players that up convert the image quality. This means standard DVD's, yes the ones you already own and can buy at the local super mart for 10 bucks or less will look very close to Hi Definition quality. You will need the special cable and the fancy hi definition television. The good news these up converting DVD players sell for $100 instead of the $400 or so you'll have to fork out for a Blu-Ray.
Here is the other problem with this new market, has anyone taken a look at the music industry lately. Well because of Mp3 players they're having some troubles and if you think the movie industry isn't heading that way then you are very wrong. While things are going to play out a little differently for sure, streaming movies over the internet directly to your TV and storing movies on your Hard Drives rather than your bookshelf is just around the corner.
In my opinion either buy the up converting DVD player or just wait because things are changing, again!
The HD DVD VS Blu - Ray war was an expensive one for both Toshiba and Sony, the question is what has Sony really won?
