Ischemic Colitis - Choose Natural Treatments

By Shannon Pollock
Nov 22, 2008
Ischemic colitis is a medical condition in which large intestine is inflamed and there can be injury to the large intestine due to inadequate blood supply. Ischemic colitis generally affects those in their senior years. Causes of the reduced level of blood flow can cause changes in the systemic circulation or local factors such as the constriction of blood vessels or even a blood clot.

Although there are medical treatments of ischemic colitis, it can also be prevented and treated by altering your diet and limiting the intake of certain foods, while increasing the intake of other foods. There are natural ways to help treat the effects of ischemic colitis that include:

*Develop a weekly menu which will help you watch out for certain foods that can increase your symptoms and also help you plan and organize better balanced meals in your diet.

*Lessen your intake of dairy, caffeine and certain fruits and vegetables if you start to experience diarrhea and abdominal cramping.

*Avoid snacks and certain types of food that are high in fat like foods like chips. Choose lower fat and healthier foods. Choosing natural foods can also help.

*Try to prepare well balanced and healthy meals ahead of time if you do not think that you will have enough time during the week to prepare them. A lot of people tend to be very busy during the week and do not have the time to prepare healthy meals and usually rely on more unhealthy alternatives. If you have a busy week planned, try taking one day to prepare different kinds of healthy foods that you can enjoy all week.

*Avoid alcoholic beverages because alcohol can stimulate bowel movements and increase the diarrhea.

*Do not skip meals - make sure that you eat at least three meals a day and incorporate snacks in between them to make sure that you will not overload your body and system by eating only one or two large meals.

In addition to these dietary choices, to avoid ischemic colitis, try not to eat cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts and other vegetables that are in the cabbage family. They are gas inducing foods that can cause further irritation in the intestine.

Try to incorporate high protein foods like eggs and fish into the diet because they can help reconstruct the cells. Fish oil and flax seed oil are highly recommended in your diet when treating ischemic colitis.

You may need to alter your diet somewhat, and you may need to try different combinations of food in your diet before you find those that work well for you. It is possible to treat most symptoms and occurrences by maintaining a well balanced and healthy diet. You may find that some foods work better for you than others. Trial and error and keeping track of how you react to foods will be your guide to any dietary changes you need to make.
