The History and Increasing Popularity of Male Massage

By Phoenix Delray

Male massage has become very popular in the last ten years. Male massage, sometimes also called male to male massage, allows men to enjoy the grooming and relaxation techniques that a male massage therapist has to offer without labels, stereotypes, and without feeling like they are being pigeonholed. The whole basis of male massage is that to feel good through male massage is neither a male nor a female quality; it is a human quality.

The increasing popularity of male massage points to the fact that the stereotypical notion that men can only feel comfortable with a female massage therapist is in the past. While stereotypes continue to fade about male massage, the clientele expands and more males, gay and straight, are looking to relax and unwind with male massage professionals.

The term Male massage has come to signify the method of treating physical conditions by manipulating the muscles and the joints of the body by male professionals. The word massage comes from the Arabic word mass and specifically means pressing the muscles of the body with the hands and promoting suppleness and stimulate vitality by exercising traction on the joints.

Male massage is thought to have been adopted by the French from Arabian physicians, who have played a vital role in reviving the popularity of male massage and its treatment. It is known that professional male massage therapists were employed by Alexander the Great in 327 BC. In China, male massage is practiced regularly by their professional classes. Hippocrates describes the use of male massage for treatment of stiff joints, and he was followed by other Greek physicians in using male massage therapy.

The Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians all used male massage as a regular part of the procedure of a bath, with or without any specific therapeutic intention. Through the centuries, although male massage had always been applied and used, it was no doubt a reservation for those of civilized life.

The history of male massage is one that is thought to be as old as the process of bathing, experts think, and evolved among all different races from a natural instinct. Animals will rub, press, or lick a part of the body that is sore or injured, and experts think that even early savages practiced a form of male massage to treat and heal their bodily uneasiness as well. As time marches on and people today are busier and more stressed than ever, male massage is experiencing a revival in popularity in an effort to relax and unwind, physically and mentally.
