Buying Gifts For A New Romantic Interest
When you start dating someone just a few weeks before the holidays it can always be awkward to buy gifts for one another. First of all, you are still in the "getting to know you" stages of the relationship so you may not know exactly what to buy. It can also be a bit shaky because you aren't always sure of one another's financial status and you don't know how much to spend. Overall, it can be a daunting task to choose and gift gifts in a new relationship.
To make things easy, you just need to be upfront about your intentions to buy a gift. You can ask simply, "Would you like to exchange gifts for the holidays?" This is an easy out for the person that you are dating to say that they would rather not exchange gifts for monetary reasons. You may also decide that instead of buying one another that you are both going to pitch in for a nice dinner or something of this sort. Posing the question is the best thing that you can do to clear up whether or not you should be shopping for the person that you are dating.
If you decide that you are going to buy gifts for one another, you should set a price limit. Tell them that you would rather them save their money for things that you can do together, so they should keep it under a certain dollar amount. You may be able to gauge how much they can afford and if you can't, keep it safe and say $20 or $40. If you know that they can bake or cook, tell them that you would like for them to bake or cook you something instead, if you are worried about them spending too much.
Keep things simple when you do buy a gift. Don't get too intimate or too involved. Buy something that you know that they would enjoy such as that CD they have been talking about, that beautiful throw they have been looking at, or even a gift certificate to their favorite salon or store. You don't have to buy jewelry or lingerie or anything of this sort. Instead, keep it simple and safe to ensure that you don't send any mixed messages.
If in doubt, ask what they would like. Or, when you are at their home look around and see what sort of things they like. Look at the colors, textures, and themes and derive some ideas from this.
Think outside of the box if you have to and buy them those new seat covers for their car they have been looking for, a flowering plant that you think they would like, or even tickets to a movie that they have been talking about. You don't have to go for something that you can wrap or that they would be expecting. Just shop and give with caution, you don't want to come on too strong or seem too impersonal.
