What Type Of Dog Is Best For Child

If you are a parent looking to get a dog for your child, then you no doubt have concerns. As a parent, your child is your priority. You absolutely would never do anything that would bring harm to your little one. With this in mind, you undoubtedly want to know what breed of dog would be the best pet for your child.

Initially, consider the child him/herself. Is your child young, short, playful, or energetic? Each of these aspects must be taken into consideration. It's important that your dog is the right one for your child's character. For example, you would not even consider purchasing a rough and rowdy large dog for a timid small child. The two would not mix well at all and the child would inevitably become afraid of the dog. It works the same in the alternative view. A rough energetic child would not work well with a timid dog as the dog would end up being scared of the child. What you need is a dog that has a similar personality as your child, while at the same time being smaller than your child.

As for the dog himself, it is important to know the intricacies and personalities of the breeds as a whole. Some dogs are very temperamental and aggressive, as others are more calm and timid. You will likely want to avoid the more aggressive breeds altogether. The Rottweiler is one breed that has a very large reputation as being an aggressive and temperamental breed of dog. Rottweilers are very intelligent animals, yet they seem to have a rather short temper, making them a bad choice for small children. Boxers are much the same. They aren't overly temperamental, but they are extremely energetic. It is not unusual for this breed to get excited and scratch a child while doing nothing more than playing around.

On the other end of the equation, we have the more calm breeds that are very suitable for children. One of these is the Dalmatian. Dalmatians are very calm, intelligent, and extremely loving, as well as a visual stimulant for your child. They are long-lived dogs if given the proper care, so your child can actually grow up with their furry friend. Another excellent choice is that of the Beagle. Beagles are largely used as hunting dogs, but make excellent household pets. They are smart and easily trainable, very calm and extremely loving. They can also be very protective over a child that they are raised around.

Overall, the list of dogs that make good childhood pets is very long. Among them is the Golden Retriever, Labrador Retrievers, Chocolate Labs, Poodles, Dachshunds, Basset Hounds, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and St. Bernards. Regardless of the breed you choose, it's best to get your child a puppy. This way, the child will grow with the pet and the two will develop a bond. Let's face it; a beloved dog can be so much more than a pet. It can be a friend and a member of your family. It can be a gift that will stay in your child's heart forever.
