How Damaging are Your Skin Care Products?

Your favourite skin care products may not be as safe as you believe. If your favourite skin cleanser is foamy and you love to feel those tiny bubbles popping and cleaning your face, you may not be giving your skin the cleansing and freshening that you think.

Facial cleansers which have foaming action almost certainly contain Sodium Laureth Sulphate and/or Soodium Lauryl Suplhate. These chemicals are common ingredients in skin care products, but are also found in heavy duty cleansers, engine degreasers and other things you wouldn't want anywhere near your face! These chemicals can impair your immune system and cause skin inflammation.

Another ingredient which is in a lot of personal care products is Propylene Glycol. As you may know, this is one of the important ingredients in antifreeze! Again, not something you want on your face.

Mineral oil is another skin care ingredient that may seem harmless when first considered. Mineral oil coats your body like a waterproof outer layer of skin. This keeps the skin from emitting toxins and prevents it from breathing and performing necessary cellular respiration. This clogs pores, worsening acne and causing other skin conditions. Despite all this however, it is still one of the most used ingredients in many skin care lines.

The products which contain these chemicals usually also have lots of other chemical ingredients. These chemicals are found in lotions, skin creams and even fragrances. The manufacturers always say that the small amounts of these chemicals in their products are safe - but why risk it?

The effects of exposure to these chemicals can include cancer, headaches, hormonal imbalance and chronic fatigue syndrome. Thankfully, not all skin care products have these chemical ingredients. You should look for skin care products which are made using only natural ingredients to avoid exposing yourself to these potential hazards.

There are however some products that do contain natural ingredients that are actually good for your skin and safe to use. Emu oil is an example of one such chemical.

Emu oil is safe for anyone's skin because it is a hypoallergenic, totally neutral lipid. Emu oil skin care products penetrate deep into the skin to hydrate and nourish skin cells.

Skin care products made with pure emu oil are a natural way to soften your skin and strengthen skin cells. Emu oil also has natural anti-inflammatory properties, so it can soothe minor aches and pains and even help to alleviate arthritis pain!

Seaweed is another natural ingredient which is great for your skin. Seaweed may not look so appetizing in the wild, but in skin care products, it can help you to achieve healthy, youthful looking skin.

Botanical based skin care formulas rely on ingredients found in nature. Some of the elements found in seaweed include organic mineral salts, amino acids that can fortify the structure of the skin, several vitamins, and antioxidants which help repair cellular damage. Seaweed has also been found to be one of the best ingredients to promote skin cell regeneration.

Natural skin care products which are free of chemicals and have antioxidants and vitamins A, C and E naturally detoxify, nourish and hydrate your skin.

Unfortunately, the world is not going to change their habits immediately. But you can take small steps to ensure that you and your family take better care of your skin by using products that contain only top quality, natural ingredients that are derived from nature.
