How To Stop Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are sudden intense feelings of anxiety, fear and discomfort. The underlying cause of panic attack symptoms is the release of adrenaline into the bloodstream. This happens when the body responds to situations of extreme danger which is commonly referred to as fight or flight response. The trouble is when this release of adrenaline happens too regularly and unnecessarily, which leads to panic attacks.
Panic attacks can seemingly come from out of nowhere. You may be doing something very common that you do all the time, such as buying groceries, driving or just taking a walk. Then suddenly you are hit by a panic attack. Your hands start to shake uncontrollably, your breathing becomes shallow and quickens and you feel your heart beating faster and faster.
Slowly there will be thoughts of paranoia; which are feelings of being the center of other people's negative observation and judgment. Thoughts of worst possible scenarios will start to engulf the mind. The mind will start to believe that the worst things will happen, such as the ceiling collapsing, the elevator breaking down or the plane crashing etc.
It is no wonder why people suffering from panic attacks are so affected by this affliction. They live in fear because of it. Panic attacks may come anytime and anywhere, and this has greatly affected their confidence to live their daily lives.
To deal with a panic attack, the most effective method is to face it head on. Don't resist and fight against the panic attack. Rather, try to face it with courage, accept it and allow it to run through it's course. Here are the reasons why doing this is a good method.
First, it is because fear feeds on fear. The more you fight against or try to avoid a panic attack, the more fear you are letting out. And as you do that you are feeding it and making the panic attack even stronger. However if you face it head on, the attack has nothing to feed on and slowly it's energy will be drained.
Panic attacks are like roller coaster rides. You'll notice that when you resist against the movement of the roller coaster, you will be more fearful and anxious. However when you go along with it, it will feel exhilarating. Remember, what you resist persists.
Second, by not resisting a panic attack and facing it head on instead, you will experience and realize that there is actually no danger in the situation at all. However if you continuously resist and run away from a panic attack, you will only escape it until the next time it happens.
Coming through a panic attack unharmed, unscathed and totally safe will change your feelings and perceptions towards panic attacks. The experience will give you the realization that the panic attacks you experienced are just the result of your illusions of danger. That is what it is, just illusions. You will know that there isn't any real danger. By having this experience and understanding, you will be able to face future panic attacks with more courage and confidence. That will be the start of the road to recovery.
