Is Home Schooling Right for You?

Home schooling has become much more common today, as many more materials and organized groups have become available to assist parents in their home schooling efforts. But home schooling isn't for everyone. It is right for your family?

To answer this question, it is important to consider the benefits of home schooling as well as the disadvantages to determine whether home schooling would work for you.

There are many positives to consider with home schooling. One of the biggest benefits to home schooling as opposed to public school is the ability to let your children learn at their own pace.

When your child picks up a concept quickly, you are able to move onto the next, and when your child struggles with a fundamental, you can take all the time you need until your student has it down.

Children in home schooling don't have to be restricted to the ages and grades of the traditional school year. You can wait to begin your son in kindergarten or graduate your daughter up mid-year if she has mastered all she needs to in her current grade. This flexibility is one of the biggest draws that many parents have to the home schooling idea.

Other parents like the idea that home schooling allows them to incorporate their spiritual beliefs into the lesson plan. For Christians, the ability to teach the concept of intelligent design alongside evolution is an attractive benefit indeed.

Many families will incorporate bible study or other religious teaching alongside the standard curriculum in home schooling to ensure their children learn the proper values along with their lessons. Some parents appreciate the fact that home schooling also allows them a more flexible schedule, so they can take vacations when they like instead of when the public school schedule dictates.

There are many positives to home schooling, but there are some disadvantages as well.

Many parents are not fully prepared for the level of commitment that home schooling requires. The early grades may not be so overwhelming, but as the child gets into higher grades, the preparation and teaching time may keep parents from working at a job or exploring other interests.

There is also a concern over the social skills home schooling teaches, but these concerns can usually be addressed through home school networks and extracurricular activities that allow kids opportunities to socialize.

So is home schooling right for your family? You are the only one who can make the decision, but by carefully weighing the pros and cons that home schooling offers, you can make the best choice for your clan.
