Choosing A Bus For Your Church
Eventually, most every church will have the need to purchase at least one bus or large vehicle, and the best way to choose a church bus is to appoint a planning committee of people within your church organization who will be able to best evaluate the needs of both your church and the ministries and people who will use and/or be aided by the purchase of a commercial vehicle. The first question to address is how will the vehicle be used? You may have a specific need or ministry in mind for your church bus for the short term, but as with any big investment, you should consider how the needs of this purchase can and will evolve over time.
The bus that you choose should be able to be easily boarded by children, the elderly, and anyone else who may have need of it. You will probably want to consider a bus with wheelchair lift capabilities as well. You will also want to think about whether your new church vehicle will be used primarily for short term or long-term trips or for some combination of both. Climate is also important to consider, as well as comfortable seating. Of course, this doesn't mean that you should focus all of your time and available budget on purchasing a bus with plush leather seating and drop down televisions above every seat. (Unless your budget allows for that, of course) in fact, a pre-owned vehicle may be the best option, provided that you inspect it carefully.
Check the service record of the bus, and if the seller cannot provide one, that should be your first red flag, since this record contains important information including the repair and service history, the age of the engine, the mileage of the vehicle, and other details. You should inspect the bus carefully for any leaks, especially transmission leaks, since transmissions and hydraulic break systems for commercial buses can be extremely costly to repair.
The size of the engine is another important consideration, whether you are purchasing a new vehicle, or a certified pre-owned one. The general rule of thumb is to purchase the largest engine within your budget, and consider the body style of the bus that you are considering, since certain styles make the engine more accessible and therefore easier to repair.
Choosing the right church bus is an important decision, which is why you should research all of your options thoroughly.
