Wire Rope - Proper Use Makes Wire Ropes Last Long

Aug 17, 2007
Ropes are required for a range of purposes from tying to hauling. They are made of natural fibers like jute and hemp as well as manmade materials like steel. Wire ropes were initially made from wrought iron, but today are made of steel. They were developed in Germany and became popular because they were stronger than hemp ropes or metal chains.

Wire rope is made of several strands that are laid or twisted together like a helix. Each strand is made of metal wires. These wires are laid together like a helix. Therefore, a wire rope is manufactured in the same way as a rope made of natural fiber. The core around which the strands are twisted may be of steel, jute, hemp, or manila. This helps to reduce the stress when the rope is bent. Wire ropes are used in cable cars, cable railways, cranes, elevators, and aerial lifts.

Is long term durability more important than sheer strength against impact, for instance? Will the ropes ability to withstand the elements be a factor, or is the rope primarily for indoor use?

Good climbing rope businesses should provide you with details on the ropes moisture absorption ability, yarn on yarn abrasion factor, and strength and elongation properties. Additionally they should reveal the conditions under which the climbing rope has been tested - wet or extreme conditions are obviously the most desirable for outdoor rope use.

The lay of the wire rope is important. It indicates the manner in which the wires in a strand or the strands in the rope are laid. There are several types of lays. In ordinary lay, the lay of wires in the strands is in the opposite direction to the lay of the stands that make up the wire. Ordinary lay is also known as regular lay. In Lang's lay, the lay of wires is in the same direction as the lay of the strands. Lang's lay is also known as Albert's lay. In alternate lay, the wires alternate between being in the same direction and the opposite direction to the lay of the strands. This is also known as reverse lay.

A wire rope is often referred to as a precision machine. During operations, wires change position with respect to each other and so do strands. Internal lubrication is provided during manufacture to reduce friction and prevent corrosion. Wire rope breakage can lead to serious injury and even loss of life. It can cause severe damage to equipment and loss of time. Breakage is caused mainly because of undersized rope or the use of incorrect rigging hardware at the time of installation. In operations wire ropes face wear, tension, bending, corrosion, and crushing. Improper handling or misuse reduces their utility and life.
