Two Important Steps In Starting Your Own Jewelry Business

One of the most difficult, but also most rewarding, things you can ever do in your life is start your own business and watch it grow into something profitable and fun. One of the hottest new home business ideas to appear in recent years is the trend of designing, making and selling your own handcrafted jewelry.

The basics of starting a home jewelry business are pretty straight-forward: You will need some supplies and tools, you will need to teach yourself how to make jewelry pieces and you'll have to be able to sell your jewelry online or at craft shows or through jewelry parties or through some other channel.

And while many people are actually starting their own jewelry business, many are not seeing the sales or the profits they were hoping to see simply because they didn't take the time to really build their business in an orderly manner. There are two basic things that any home jewelry maker can do which will greatly increase her chances of turning her home-based business into a success.

First, you should really consider taking a basic business class at a local community college or training center if you're unsure about how to run a business. These classes may only cost $100 or so and they will give you lots of valuable insight into basic things like selling products, collecting taxes, local licenses, zoning issues and other things you may encounter as you begin to make and sell your own jewelry. These classes are also valuable because you may meet other people in your neighborhood or community that you can work with to grow your business. I took a business class several years ago and met a woman who was opening her own boutique of special items for expectant moms and their babies. We started talking and eventually I ended up making jewelry and displaying it her store. My jewelry ended up being sold to a lot of people I wouldn't have normally been in contact with and we both made a profit on the jewelry pieces being sold!

Second, you should definitely invest in a computer and some software to help you run your business more efficiently. The sooner you begin working efficiently the better off you'll be. There are lots of different software packages you can download for free that will give you some basic word processing and spreadsheet abilities, but you'll probably want to invest a little bit of money in some specialized software for making jewelry. There are several bead jewelry software programs currently on the market and some have more features than others. Bead jewelry software will help you track all your beads and jewelry supplies, help you price your jewelry pieces properly to assure that you're making a healthy profit, allow you to create invoices and will even help you keep in touch with past clients so that you can easily contact and sell more jewelry to them in the future!

Just investing a little bit of time and a little less money in the business side of a home jewelry business will end up saving you a lot of trouble and wasted effort down the road when your jewelry business begins to really take off!
