How to Prepare for a Public Relations Job
Many companies are becoming increasingly aware of their presence in the corporate market. To craft their image, they often turn to a seasoned public relations expert. Whether you are just starting out in the field or moving further up the ladder, there are many things to remember when preparing for a public relations job.
1. Research as much as you can about your client before you start working. The more you know about the unique things they do, the easier it will be to shape their image.
2. Polish your networking skills. You will most likely be attending social functions or trade shows and it is helpful to come prepared with a canned speech that briefly sums up the important aspects of your client's business. With some practice, you will never be at a loss for words.
3. Join a professional organization such as the Public Relations Society of America. It is a great way to meet other specialists in your field and you will also broaden your skills if you attend the informational seminars that these types of organizations host.
4. Draft a letter of introduction to local media contacts. It should explain your new role with the company and outline the type of media partnerships that you hope to build. After a few days, follow-up with a phone call so that they associate your voice with a name.
5. Sharpen your writing skills. A good public relations expert is proficient at writing press releases that will quickly catch a reporter's eye. If necessary, attend a writing class at a local community college that specializes in business communications.
6. Learn how to prepare a realistic budget. Every company needs to plan their public relations efforts well in advance (particularly with ad placement) and your client will appreciate your diligence.
7. Expect to be called upon during times of crisis. Your client may encounter bad press and it will be your responsibility to quell the public's reaction to the news. By remaining calm and articulate in your response, you will be able to help your client turn around their image.
