What Happens When Fire Becomes A Backdraft

By Aydan Corkern

If you have a fire in one room and the fire is going really heavy with a lot of heat and the fire is only in one room at this time and the air in another room is cooler, the flames from the first room can seep under the door into the other room, causing this second room to have an explosion called a back draft. As a fire's temperature can reach 500 degrees, the heat on one's face and body can damage your skin, causing blisters to appear in a very short time, and this heat can take your breath away just as quick.

If you have a fire in your home at night, never bolt out of bed. You will need to roll onto the floor so as not to breathe in the straight heat of this fire because it could be your last. To get out of this fire safely, you will need to crawl with your face 18 inches from the floor because of the toxic fumes that will be in your carpets. Crawl to the door and always run your hand over the door to make sure that you don't feel any heat. If there is no heat, open the door very slowly so as not to cause another back draft from happening in this room.

Like we are told in school that if you are caught in a fire and your clothes were to start on fire, the best thing to do is stop, drop, and roll. This is still the best method to put out a fire on a person. A fire with a back draft can happen in almost any type of fire in the home, office, or even an apartment building. The ones that happen in an apartment building can be far worse because there are so many rooms and floors that this fire can go. In these types of fires, it seem like the fire and flames can go on forever because there are all of these rooms and so many ways it can escape to the other floors, either by going through the ceilings or the floors.

As long as there is air for this fire to breathe the chances of having a back draft fire increases. With each opened door that might happen on any level floor in this building, this fire will take advantage and try to stay alive.
