Watch Out Plumber: Sonic Is On The Hunt

By Alan Biron
Dec 2, 2008
In the late 80's and the early 90's Nintendo has Mario and Luigi as their popular mascots. No other video game company had a mascot as popular as Mario. The concept of Mario was simple, he and his brother Luigi are plumbers and they go through series of playing levels and different adventures. But then in 1991, Sega Games developed a new mascot, one that would rival Mario. He was Sonic the Hedgehog. The concept may sound silly at first but the game is fun to play and is as popular now as it was when it first game out in 1991.

Mario's popularity was still on the rise. Many Mario fans may not remember that Mario first appeared in the Donkey Kong game from Atari. Mario was a hero, he was always trying to save Princesses or playing with race cars in the Mario Kart Series and he was playing sports like Mario Tennis and Mario Golf. Mario seemed to be everywhere.

But soon Sonic was on the trail of Mario. Kids found Sonic to be cute and exciting at the same time. As Nintendo was putting out different games featuring Mario, Sega was developing games like Sonic the Hedgehog2, Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and K and Knuckles and Sonic 3D. All of these games drew some stiff competition from Mario and the race was on.

What makes Sonic so great is that he appears in other video game systems. The games can be played on Sega Systems, Playstation2, Game Boy, Xbox and the Wii just to name a few. Sonic quickly became just as popular as Mario. There were fans of Mario's that crossed over to try Sonic Games and vice versa. But the competition remains strong even today.

The Sega Company and the Nintendo Company got together in 2005 and started discussing a joint effort with their two best selling mascots of all time. Then in 2008, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics came out. Fans could choose Team Mario or Team Sonic. Each team has characters from their respective game series. Then you could pit them against each other and see who would be the best at the Olympics.

That game became a best seller and continues to sell well today. Both companies are still designing their own games around their popular mascots. Mario had a bit of an upper hand in 2005 because Sega had not released a Sonic game in some time. But then the tides turned and Sonic was number one again. Each game has a different style, Mario is a Plumber and Sonic is a Hedgehog with human powers and non-human powers such as he can run in super sonic speed.

Each mascot has their place in history but the rivalry is fun and will continue until Sega and Nintendo decide to hang up their characters one day. But which one will do so first? Who knows until then we can look forward to seeing more Mario Games and even more Sonic Games.
