Video Games: From Block Images To Ultra Realistic
Video games have certainly come a long way from back in the 80's. Do you remember games like Space Invaders, Asteroids, Missile Command and Pong? These games are considered Block Image Games; most video games from back in the day were made from this image. The graphics were 2D and everyone thought these games were the best. Not because of the look but because of the concept. Having a game console at home was better than going to the arcade every day.
Then came games in the 90's like Mario Brothers and Zelda. These games had a better image; these were actual characters that the player can control. Unlike games like Space Invader, Frogger and Centipede where the players controlled a small dash at the bottom of the screen and this was considered your "guy" in the game.
But with games like Mario and Zelda, there were actually guys that you can move and control to an extent. These characters only move side to side and back and forth. But these games slowly started to take over the games with block images. What draws most gamers to a video game is graphics and what the player can do as far as controlling the game. These games were a step up from the Atari games.
Then in the 90's came games like Final Fantasy and Wolfenstein. These games have some cool graphics. They were like cartoons almost life like. You could see more detail in the other characters in the game, in some games you aren't represented by a character you could see but the game is played out looking through your eyes. It was a pretty cool concept. The background and the other graphics were in color and more dimensional than the other games had. (Example: Asteroids).
Then came the games of the 00's. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty and Tony Hawk's Underground Series have realistic graphics. In the Grand Theft Auto games you can see facial features of the characters in the game. You get a sound track with the game. These games are interactive and the sound effects are very realistic.
Just like anything else in life, things progress sometimes for the better and sometimes not. But from the first day the block image video game came out kids begged their parents for these games. But now when a new game is announced people line up outside the store for hours just to be the first to play the games. The very real graphics are a great reason why that is. Over time technology will become more advanced and who knows what we could see in another 5 years in the video game genre. Only time will tell.
As long as these graphics continue to advance, kids will always play video games. Can you imagine if the world of video games went back to the days of Pac Man and Centipede would kids be playing as many games as they do today, probably not. We just have to sit and wait for the next greatest thing to come along.
