The Work-At-Home Woman and Today's New Reality

By Janet Giacoma
Dec 3, 2008
It used to be that a woman was either a career woman, or a stay-at-home mom. Basically, those were the only two options. Going way back, there might be a third category which would be the woman who didn't have kids and didn't work either. She just stayed at home and was referred to euphemistically as a "home maker." It's pretty clear that very few women today would choose to be called a home maker. We should also probably point out that career women are often also moms as well. But because they work outside the home, they typically take on a sub-moniker--besides being a career woman--like soccer mom, or hockey mom, or dance or even gymnastics mom.

Regardless of how you label yourself however, whether you're a career woman, a mom, or both, one word that characterizes your life is inevitably "busy." As if the demands of a career aren't enough, the demands of juggling a career and family--or even just a hectic social life--come together to create a lot of both stress and pressure. Sometimes so much stress and pressure accumulate that the quality of life begins to deteriorate. Dissatisfaction with this state of affairs has caused many women to seek a better balance in their life by looking for ways to save both time and energy.

This is where the relatively new term of the work-at-home woman originates. More and more successful women are finding professional fulfillment--and tremendous financial rewards--by starting and operating a home-based business that leverages the internet. Still career focused but tiring of the commute and corporate ladder politics, these women are seeking opportunities that allow them to grow in their careers, make a handsome income, and more importantly, completely shape and define their financial future.

Typically anywhere from 35 to 55, the new work-at-home woman can both escape the rat race and raise a family--should she choose to do so--while working full time in a challenging and lucrative business that she herself owns. This of course is another primary motivator--there is no better security than profitable self-employment.

The internet has enabled this trend. Women everywhere are using the internet to research opportunities, to network, to find buyers and to sell their products and services--all from the comfort of their homes. If you're a woman looking to leverage time and to make money while still enjoying your life, it's something you should look in to.
