Car Insurance Options And Deductibles
It is dangerous to drive uninsured. In fact, in most states it is actually illegal to do so. Even if you are never discovered, even if you never hit someone or get into an accident. There are still many other situations which can arise. For example, what if you are robbed? Or some mishap happens with the car. It could pop out of gear and roll down a hill, or into a lake. Sure, its not likely, but why take the chance. Then you'll have a very fat bill to pay all by yourself.
There is no better protection on the highway that the protection given to you by automobile insurance. As long as your life is spared in the accident, auto insurance can pay for the repairs to your car and the damage to the other one. Auto insurance can even pay to have you treated in the hospital, if you are injured.
How do you choose your coverage levels? First, you should look at what your legal responsibilities are. Make sure you get at least this amount of coverage. Then decide if you would like more than this required amount. If your car is older, there may be some adjustments that you can make to save some money. Of course, you should check with an agent to find out for sure.
What about the deductible? This is the amount of money you will have to pay out of pocket whenever there is any claim that you need to file. Given this, you might be tempted to pick as low a deducible as possible. However, doing this might be a mistake.
You see, the amount you are charged for the insurance usually goes up when your deductible goes down. This is just a fact of the insurance business. In some cases going with a $50 deductible can increase your premium thousands. In fact, it is recommended that you choose a deductible as high as you can afford.
Think about it like this. Do you really want to file an insurance claim for $100? Probably not. How about $250? I would still think this amount is too low. Maybe $500 there could be some leeway. Therefore, why not set your deductible at around $500? Or more if this number is also too low for you to personally consider filing an insurance claim.
Just set your number at whatever level you feel comfortable with personally. Ultimately you need to be able to sleep at night and feel safe and protected.
Do not be surprised, on moving into a new state, if the state's laws on auto insurance maintain that you buy no less than a specified minimum of coverage. It is common enough to have the firms covering you for amounts up to $25,000 for injury on someone else. Again, in this case, make sure you look and find out about your legal responsibilities. These will vary according to state.
When you purchase auto insurance, it is good to be specific about what you are interested in. Know what level of deductible you feel comfortable with and know what is going to be covered. And what will not be covered. If you have any questions, make sure you ask an agent. Get everything they say in writing.
