Organic Baby Clothes - Why They Are Better For Your Baby

By Taylor Turnstone
Dec 3, 2008
Organic baby clothes are clothes that are made from fibers that are grown in fields that never have pesticides used on them. These fibers are also processed without mixing the organic fibers together with non-organic fibers. Organic baby clothes are the only way to be one hundred percent sure that you, as a concerned parent, will know you are not putting harmful chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizers up against your babies' skin.

Most people do not realize that cotton crops are one of the most chemical dependent crops around. In fact 2.6 billion dollars worth of pesticides are dumped on crops every year. When you make the decision to buy organic cotton made clothes for your baby, you can sleep better knowing that the clothing you put on them will not hurt their skin or affect their health. Aside from the health related advantages, organic baby clothes are also more durable and last longer than the non-organic clothes. This is true because the fabric has never been broken down by any harsh chemicals. Since chemicals were not part of the processing, the fibers remain softer and will not be coarse and harsh on your baby's skin.

Another place that you should think about going organic is in the baby's nursery. When a test was done on seven infant sleeping accessories, they tested positive for Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), also known as flame retardants. Flame retardants can be very harmful to your baby. These chemicals were found in mattress pads and sleep wedgies, the two areas that your baby spends most of their time the first few months of their lives.

It is important that you, the parent, give your children every opportunity you can afford. One of the most important things you can do is provide a healthy environment for them throughout their developmental years. It is known that toxins, such as PBDEs, can be harmful to brain development. The EPA has noted that PBDEs are particularly toxic to the developing brains of animals and other studies have shown that these compounds impair development of the nervous system.

In summary, dressing your baby with organic clothes is one more thing you can do to help your baby's health and well being. Educate yourself about the composition of items including clothes and bedding materials, so that you know what is next to your baby's skin and surrounding sleeping area. If your baby does develop a skin irritation or allergy and is wearing only organic clothes, you can at the very least, eliminate some possible causes, saving time to uncover the actual source.
