Revolutionary China 1950; Executive China 2008,
Chinese antiques shop talk can carry on about many subjects, but the amazing changes that many people can remember is the change in the Stalinist China. The glorious leader was Chairman Mao whose followers where hundreds of millions of Chinese people. Today they are pouring into towns for the factory jobs that keep being built. We read that China is down to its last few hundred million people China can spare from the farms. Chinas fields and fish fqrms are vastly productive. China is self sufficient in most food and livestock.
China is the largest producer and consumer of pork in the world. The numbers for livestock and grain production are continuallly rising, and China is so much more rich and productive than in 1950, foods and luxuries non existant in 1950. We do know there had been periodical starvation through China in the first half of the century. But it was really the ego and wrong headedness of chairman Mao who caused such starvation of the people of China in the 1950 era and the 1960 era. It is wrong that this not be taught as locigal lessons but Chinese is still enmeshed in the myths and legends of what works and why.
When China entered the Korean War it was a great shock to the US, and the UN troops who by that time were close to the Chinese border: they had taken most of North Korea. But with the hordes of Chinese volunteers and soldiers the UN Allied forces were pushed back to about where the war had begun at the 38th parallel. This move gave great status to China in that it was taking on America and all the European powers and proving the adage; never fight a war on a Asian mainland.
At the 1953 end of the Korean war still had France fighting Ho Chi Min and his Viet Cong soldiers in Vietman, and France was losing. When Dien Bien Phu fell, the French made as honorable deal they could, folded their tents and went back to France. But not before passing over that responsibility to America. There was a long Vietnam War into a decades long horror that ruined millions of lives and many soldiers displaced and ignored after that war.
But irony upon irony can happen. Richard Nixon went to China. China's Chairman Deng came to America, and in 1979 Deng accepted captitalism and declared it is glorious to get rich. Originally only companies with red colors were allowed, but soon many brand were setting up their factories, and we know China keeps growing its ecoonomy by 9 percent a year. The rest of the world is seeing a miracle, in a lifetime. Chinese antiques shop keeper would be talking about this, although their 3 storey building is being taken down for a tower.
The vast scale of what China is accomplishing now is impressive to say the least. All along coastal China and especially around HOng Kong, cities are being created, people are earning more money than ever before, and China is becoming the factory to the world. The residents in the factories like the near by towers. They are promised a space in the new building. Will this happen? We can only wait and see.
