Plain Truth About Hair Extensions

By Lance Thorington
Dec 3, 2008
As a general rule, women are dissatisfied with their appearance. They think they are too fat or too thin, too busty or too flat, or that their hair is just all wrong. Of all the things a woman can find to fault her appearance, hair is the easiest to take care of and correct. Many women have chosen to wear shorter hairstyles for increased ease of care. They then decide that the shorter style is not for them. Hair extensions can take care of this problem.

Hair extensions come in many types, lengths and colors. Most have to be applied at a salon by professional hair stylists and extension specialists. One exception to this is clip in hair extensions. These can be applied by the wearer and removed at will. Almost all hair extensions are made of real human hair. This allows the salon to match a person's hair color and type to ensure that extensions look completely natural.

One thing that a woman should be aware of before deciding to invest in hair extensions is that they are temporary. The extensions are attached directly to the existing hair. Natural growth of the living hair will affect the bonds used and cause them to become loose after an average of 5 to 8 weeks. At this time, the extensions will need to be removed and reapplied. Most allow for reuse of all the hair if it is properly cared for while being worn.

Salon applied hair extensions can be done in different ways. The main distinctions are individual and weft. The next distinction is how the extensions are bonded to the hair, glue, polymer, braided in, or other. Individual hair extensions can take several days to apply. As the name implies, each individual strand of hair has an extension applied to it. This is by far the most time consuming and expensive method of having hair extensions applied. Weft hair extensions are done by selecting a section of the hair that runs in the same direction and applying a line of hair strands that are attached to one another to the section as a whole. Most methods of applying wefts can be completed in one day, though they make take an entire day.

Many hair extension methods rely on some type of glue or polymer to attach the hair. It is important for a woman to know exactly what will be used, as some of these substances will harm human hair. Some use heat to bond the extension to the hair. Still others braid the strands into the existing hair. Some even use small tubes that allow the living hair and the extension to be inserted and then crimped together. These tubes are so tiny that they are unnoticeable when the process is complete.

Hair extensions are easy to care for. Being made of human hair, it is normally possible to care for them in the same manner used to care for the rest of the hair. Some of the methods of bonding the hair extensions to the hair are affected by certain shampoos and other chemicals. The salon will tell a woman if this is the case.
