5 Ideas For Holidaying in South Africa

By John McElborough

South Africa is an amazing place to visit. You may want to have a secluded holiday full of tranquillity and respite. Or you may be inclined to adventure through the stunning landscapes, rock climbing up and bungee jumping down. Either way the gorgeous province can cater for all wants and needs.

Whale watching. You'll have to be prepared for an early start, some expeditions set sail at six in the morning, it depends on the time of year and the current whaling patterns. Despite this the venture is well worth it, especially when you see that massive tail fin flap out of the ocean and crash down to resonate waves that rock your little voyeuristic boat. These mammals are incredible creatures and nothing beats viewing them in the wet, rubbery flesh. So get an early night and a wholesome sleep and prepare to be in awe at the scale of these fantastic oceanic creatures.

The beach may sound like an obvious choice, but there are some really fantastic sun traps. Often it's very easy to simply settle for the shore closest to your hotel, and although im sure it's very nice, there is a plethora of sandy paradises throughout the south of Africa. Kenya is renowned for hosting some of the most perfect beaches; in particular Malindi and Watamu boast the best locations for tranquil sun worshipping. Crystal clear waters are only bettered by the pristine white sand and a relatively unspoilt spot that is rarely overpopulated.

The South African Safari. This should not be missed under any circumstances. Without unjustly pigeonholing the region, if you go to South Africa you must take a safari ride. This is the ultimate way to experience the untouched environment that houses some of the most majestic wild animals on the globe. For those of you who disagree with the captivity of zoos and hate to view animals through iron bars, a safari is the only pure way to observe these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

South Africa holds some spectacular panoramas that are quite literally breathtaking. Mpumalanga, which translates as "the place where the sun rises" is the home of some very impressive landscapes and spellbinding scenery that includes cascading waterfalls, rich flora and fauna, and canopies containing many endangered species. Whether you want to just walk around awestruck by the natural aesthetics or if you want to engage in some extreme sports and adventure down the rivers while white water rafting, there is beauty to attract everyone.

This is only a guide to some of the definitive experiences you can have. There is such a variety of other activities in South Africa that it is physically impossible to be bored so don't let yourself be.
