Standing In The Capitoline Hill
Capitoline Hill is one of the famous 7 hills of Rome, and today is marked by the medieval architecture that dominates the landscape. Much of this architecture was designed by Michelangelo and a visit to some of these palaces is highly recommended. If you were to scratch below the surface you would discover a much longer history however.
The Capitoline Hill, from which the English word "capital" derives, was the location of a temple dedicated to the Capitoline Triad, which was reputedly the largest of all the temples in Rome. Whilst the cult and the temple were probably built before the beginning of the Roman Republic, it was precisely to this location that Julius Caesar came just as he was bringing down the Republic. On that occasion it was bad omen's that bought him begging to the gods, and indeed 6 months after doing so he was assassinated and ironically it was in this very temple that Caesar begged the gods for help that his assassins sought refuge. A little later on, this temple served as a hiding place for both the brother and nephew of Vespasian. Little of the temple remains, however the Tabularium in which the records of the city were stored can still be viewed in part.
The weaving of the old and the even older at Capitoline Hill leaves one astounded at the feats of beauty, engineering, and architecture achieved by the figures of the past. One does not need to enter into any buildings in order to be awestruck, and in fact a simple mornings wandering around the area is as entertaining as any paid for activity. However, that being said, for just a few Euros, you can enjoy the Capitoline Museum which contains the freezes and frescoes, the architecture and art, and is well worth a visit. The museum costs 8.50 Euros and is open Tuesdays to Sunday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
In terms of accommodation, you will find everything from boutique to budget in Rome and a good enough choice in the area of Capitoline Hill, although with good transport links there isn't really any need to stay near by. Advisable for a stay in Rome is to take a bed and breakfast basis hotel as there is so much to see you will end up resenting having to return to the hotel for meals. Eating out can be expensive in the city, and especially around the tourist areas you can pay a small fortune for a cup of coffee. Thus, it's a good idea to stay in accommodation a little away from the biggest tourist spots, or to find out where the locals eat ask your hotel receptionists; the Italians like to talk and share their secrets.
