Computer Runs Slowly--7 Steps To A Quick Fix
Your computer has slowed to a crawl. It boots slowly and programs are slow to load. You are getting error messages. Freezing is quite common. What is the problem? Why is this machine which once ran so smoothly now so slow and erratic? It is vastly annoying and a real time waster.
More often than not the problem lies in your computer registry. What is your registry? It is a data bank which is present in all windows operated computers. In it is stored all the data which the operating system uses to run the computer and the programs you have installed in it.
How can you tell if the registry is really the source of your problems? Firstly you should eliminate as many as possible of the other factors which can cause slow running.
(1) Delete all temporary files and cookies.
(2) Go to the list of programs installed in your machine and weed out all those you no longer use.You will probably be surprised at how much hard drive space this frees up.
(3) Empty the recycle bin to get rid of all deleted files.
(4) Go to your email program and delete all material from the deleted files box. If you have not done this for a long time you will free up a lot of disc space. Also delete all sent messages which you no longer need. In your email inbox delete everything you don't need to keep.
(5) Now use the defrag application in Windows to defragment your hard drive. This can give a major boost to performance if you have not done it recently.
(6) Use your anti virus program and antispyware program to scan for and remove viruses and spyware. These first 6 steps are the things you can do manually to speed up the computer. If it still runs slowly the problem is almost certainly in your registry.
(7) Scan your registry with a registry repair program. You can download this on the internet. You will receive a free scan which will list all the problems in your registry.
You may be tempted to try to correct these problems yourself. Take my advice--don't try this. Unless you are extremely familiar with the contents of the registry you may remove essential entries which are needed to run the computer and programs. Your computer may become inoperative.
A word here about downloading registry repair programs from the internet. You should use only those applications which are well known and safe to use. There are unfortunately malware programs masquerading as real registry repair applications. If you download one of these you are in trouble. Your computer will be infected with a rogue application which is out to fleece you for your money and will do nothing to fix your registry. These programs generally do not last for very long before the word gets out and the search engines remove them but in the meantime they may cause problems.
When you have obtained a free scan from a reputable registry repair program you will be shown a list of the problems found. This will confirm the fact that you have indeed got a registry which is in need of cleaning.
You should now invest in the complete repair package which will quickly and safely remove all the unwanted material from your registry. This may include fragments of uninstalled programs or programs which were never completely installed, unused drivers, old useless files, unused shortcuts and a host of other material.
When this unwanted material has been removed your registry will be lean and fit once more and the computer will run fast and smoothly.
