Take a Holiday in Tunisia
Bordering Algeria and Libya in North Africa, Tunisia is the most northern country in the continent. With forty percent consumed by the Sahara desert, and 1300km of coastline Tunisia ranks 36th for global economic competitiveness and the tourist infrastructure is suitable for English tourists.
With beautiful beaches, wondrous landscapes and extensive deserts a holiday in Tunisia can be one of the most fantastic getaways. Tourism in Tunisia started in the 1960s and now there are a plethora of activities and attractions to mesmerise visitors.
The extensive coastline offers plenty of opportunities for diving, surfing or any other water sports you can think of. You can go to the Sahara desert and ride a camel amongst the stunning sand dunes. You can go trekking and explore the breath taking landscape, which was used for the filming of Star Wars.
The hotels in Tunisia mainly have a luxury feel, so whether you are a business or leisure traveller you're bound to find something so suit you.
Tunis is the capital of Tunisia, and is truly cosmopolitan and accommodating. It has historical sites, local attractions, zoos, souks, luxurious hotels and some of the richest history you can find. Tunis blends European and North African cultures beautifully with the Suuqs or Souks is a local market selling incredible jewellery, clothes and art which will enchant you. Just remember to learn to barter so you can receive the best price.
Tunisia is 98% Islamic so it's no surprise that there are a lot of Mosques with varying degrees of historical importance and aesthetic charm. Zitouna Mosque was built in the 9th century and is regularly open to non-Muslims. There's also the Sidi Yousef Mosque, a 17th century mosque with octagonal minarets.
The love of art is strong in Tunisia, and arts events take place throughout the year. The biggest one is the International Festival of Carthage between July and August. At this festival you can enjoy jazz music, theatre and a fusion of local traditional and international style of music and dance.
Tunisia also attracts thousands of classical music fans from all over the world, to its Classical Music Festival in St. Louis Cathedral in Carthage, which is three weeks long in October.
The rich culture and heritage of Tunisia is evident from the diversity of its festivals. At the Siren festival you can witness the re-enactment of a traditional wedding ceremony. It is based on harvest and references to Ulysses by Homer in the book of Odyssey.
Whether it's fun, culture, heritage, history or art that you're looking for, Tunisia has it in abundance. Consider a holiday in Tunisia, combining the best of African, Mediterranean and Islamic culture.
