Freesat TV service

What is Freesat from the BBC and ITV.

Freesat is another means of receiving digital tv and radio by means of a one off payment, and then it is subscription free forever and without a contract. It's a service that is provided by the BBC and ITV and offers more than 140 Television and radio channels of fantastic programmes in crystal clear digital sound and picture quality, and should not to be confused with Freesat from Sky. Also there are going to be extra channels added over the next few months. There is also an 8 day on-screen programme guide, to make choosing programmes easier, and there is advanced teletext.

What equipment is required to receive Freesat ?

To receive Freesat you will have to purchase a set top box that is either standard or high definition for use with your existing television. The set top boxes are also available with or without a built in PVR for recording programmes on the internal hard drive. Then again you can purchase a TV with a Freesat receiver built in in which case you won't require a set top box. At present Panasonic is the only manufacturer of televisions with Freesat. The models that have Freesat built in are the following LCD TV models TX32LZD81 and TX37LZD81 and the following plasma TV models TH42PZ81B, TH46PZ81, and TH50PZ81B.

If you already own an existing sky mini dish on your house then you will be able to connect your Freesat set top box or Freesat TV to it provided you aren't using it for sky or there is an unused connection on the LNB. If there isn't an unused connection on the LNB then a satellite installer will be able to upgrade it to one with either two or four connectors. If this isn't possible then you will have to have a further dish installed. Clearly if you don't already have a satellite dish then you will have to buy one and pay for it to be installed as long as there aren't any obstructions such as trees preventing this.

What regions of the country can receive Freesat ?

Almost 98 per cent of households are capable of receiving Freesat even if they don't currently receive Freeview via normal broadcasts.

What channels are available ?

Freesat has a fantastic choice of Sport, News, Children's channels, Entertainment, Special Interest, Lifestyle, Music, Movies, Regional TV, Dating, Shopping and Gaming as well as Radio. These categories take in the finest channels from the BBC, ITV and others such as ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBeebies, CBBC, BBC News, BBC Parliament, E4, Channel 4, Zone Thriller, Zone Reality, Zone Horror, Zone Romanitica, Aljazera, Tiny Pops, KiX, CITV, Film 4, Overseas Property TV, Movies for Men, Movies 4 Men 2, True Movies, True Movies 2, Scuzz, QVC, Music, Zmusic, JML, Price-Drop Tv and countless more. With further channels comming in the future.

What about high definition Television ?

If you buy a HD Freesat set top box, to use with a HD Ready television, or a HD Freesat television then you can benefit from a picture quality that has up to 5 times more resolution than ordinary TV, with deeper and more lucid images.

There are currently two HD channels available both of which are free of charge, ITV1 and BBC HD with restricted programming but more hours available in 2009 and extra channels in the future.

If you own a HD Ready Television and don't have Sky HD or Virgin's HD Cable then Freesat offers a way of getting the most from the capabilities of your television without monthly charges.

Interactive Television at the press of a button.

By just a push of the red button you can see the up-to-the-minute news headlines, business news, lottery results, the weather, or find out if your favourite team has won. All of this information is available through user friendly menus.

You can also access the benefits of video based multi-screen interactive TV services such as the Proms, Snooker, Wimbledon, Glastonbury, the Olympics, etc. With more events to be had in the future. The red button allows you the choice of viewing events from different cameras and at different camera angles where you select which one. So you can switch to different snooker tables, or tennis courts, stages, or events when you choose.

Conclusion

With freeview still not obtainable in all areas of the country Freesat is an ideal choice that doesn't have need of a monthly payment or contract. The only other alternative is the free channel option from Sky but that doesn't have any free of charge HD channels. If you don't want to pay a monthly fee and you want to receive HD then Freesat is probably the only alternative for the next few years.
