How To Proceed With Credit Repair

Aug 17, 2007
Once you are apprised that your credit scores are below average you need to start working towards adopting measures which will mend or repair your damaged credit. However, you may be wondering how exactly to start off. Feeling that credit improvement is not an easy task and knowing that it takes several years for negative indications in credit report to get eliminated you may be disheartened. But there is still hope. If you can take up certain concrete measures then you can not only tackle bad credit but also improve it in the future.

In an effort to proceed with credit repair you need to first determine whether the credit report pertaining to you is completely correct. Make sure that all listings of account numbers are actually yours and the entries therein are correctly made. In case you find errors or wrong entries then you should immediately report the matter to the creditors and request them to take care to rectify the mistakes. The reporting agencies are also to be notified after corrections are properly made. This is especially important because studies infer that nearly 80% credit reports contain some kind of error which can lead to wrong credit scores.

Paying out all your bills in time helps avoid the negative impact which late payments have on credit rating. You need to start reducing the number of credit cards you carry by requesting the creditors to close the associated accounts. The accounts which are old and no longer in use should be closed. The new account status (after closing unnecessary accounts) is to be reported to the credit reporting agencies too so that they take note of it while providing your future credit reports.

You can make efforts to reduce the credit limits on your accounts. This will lower your amount of credit available and can be of help. With the objective of reestablishing your credit you may ask some relative or friend to co-sign for a small loan or credit card. Take care to make timely payments towards this. Settling of outstanding accounts and debts held by you can go a long way to getting rid of negative information from your report. You may even start using a secured credit card and make timely repayments as an endeavor to reestablishment of credit. Finally, you need to be careful to avoid bankruptcies, tax liens and collections.

By following such measures you can not only repair your credit but also hope to be esteemed as a holder of above par credit in the future. However, you need to be patient and persevere.
