This Is Why You Should Always Choose GSM Cell Phones
GSM cell phones are more beneficial than the locked phones. Improvement in technology has reduced the cost of the GSM cell phones. GSM cell phones are fast becoming one of the most popular cell phone standard for cellular phones in the world. These phones are already available in over 210 countries including the US and offer greater mobility and superb digital call quality. They're designed to work with any service provider. In theory, all you need to do is swap the SIM account card in the phone. As mentioned above GSM cell phones operate by using a SIM card. SIM (Security Identification Module) cards used in Global System for Mobile (GSM) cell phones are essentially smart cards that identify a unique subscriber to a wireless network and describe the services that the subscriber is entitled to receive. Since SIM cards are tied to a single subscriber, they are exchangeable between any handset that the subscriber chooses to use. The SIM card is issued by a carrier and provides cell service by activating any phone into which it is inserted. GSM cell phones are classified by its maximum transmission power in 5 classes: 20, 8, 5, 2 and 0.5 watt. A 20W device is called Class 1 and 08 is Class 5.
GSM cell phones are available in dual-band, tri-band and quad-band models. A dual band (900 and/or1800 MHz) cell phone is adequate if you only need service in overseas networks including Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and all of Asia except for Japan and South Korea. These phones are becoming very common in the US as the technology becomes more accepted. If you plan to do any international travel, you will want to select from the variety of GSM cell phones that are available.
GSM Cell phones are considered to be much more customer friendly because an unlocked GSM phone can be can be moved from carrier to carrier just by changing the SIM card. Now that people can keep their phone numbers when change carriers, and for the first time since the days of Analog cellular people will be able to keep their phones again.
Rates and configuration are obtained through the carrier and can vary widely. Some GPRS phones can be used as a modem when connected to a laptop computer. And in this case you are charged for the amount of data you download, not by the time you stay online. This is possible because in GPRS you receive data via packet switching, not circuit switching. Whereas call rates can be extremely low using this system. For example in 99% of all SIM CARDS incoming calls are free and calls to the states can cost a trifle.
In case of GSM cell phones international roaming is a considerable part of domestic providers' revenue so they "lock" their tri-band phones. That means that, even though cell phones come out of the factory compatible with any SIM card in the world, domestic providers manipulate the phones they sell so that they will only accept their own SIM cards.
