These phones are becoming very common in the US as the technology becomes more accepted. GSM Cell phones are considered to be much more customer friendly because an unlocked GSM phone can be can be moved from carrier to carrier just by changing the SIM card. In case of GSM cell phones international roaming is a considerable part of domestic providers' revenue so they "lock" their tri-band phones. That means that, even though cell phones come out of the factory compatible with any SIM card in the world, domestic providers manipulate the phones they sell so that they will only accept their own SIM cards.
