How to Celebrate the Holidays on a Budget
We're in the final weeks of the holiday season. This time of year many people can get into big trouble with their credit cards. So many of us go out and buy new furniture, decorations, and other expensive home improvements, in anticipation of having guests over our homes for the holiday celebrations. Of course, all the parties and lavish dining out in restaurants can also ring up some hefty bills. Sometimes just the infectious spirit of giving can stretch us beyond our means. It seems that our generosity may be bigger than our bank accounts. Combine all of the above and it could mean some truly serious credit problems during this season.
Don't let yourself become one of those people that is overwhelmed by credit card bills when they finally come due this January. You can take a few steps now in order to avoid digging yourself into a credit hole this holiday season. It is possible to have a great time without having to overspend. The big payoff will come in January when the bills are due and you can afford them.
Here are a few tips that will help you celebrate the holidays on a budget.
Plan ahead. Outline a budget that is based on what you can really afford to spend. Make a shopping list and stick to it. It can be easy to trip up here, but just realize that putting yourself into debt isn't going to bring joy to anyone who truly cares about you.
If you really need to cut back on gift spending, gift exchanges are a great way to have fun and save on gift giving. Many families also have a policy of only buying gifts for the children. This is another option that can be considered in order to save some money.
Ultimately, you may find that giving less is what others were planning as well, and this can actually alleviate some of the stress of the holidays for everyone involved. The effort to keep up with everyone else's gift giving can be a great source of anxiety for many people. There's pressure to be good enough in giving back, and if it is agreed ahead of time that gifts will be limited, this can significantly reduce, or perhaps eliminate this particular source of holiday anxiety.
By planning ahead, and agreeing to stick to a budget, you will find that the holidays aren't so much about getting yourself into a six month hole of debt, and more about celebrating life with your friends and family. Have a great holiday season, and one that you won't regret later. Your holiday season can be fun and debt free for everyone involved by celebrating the holidays on a budget.
Happy holidays.
