Freelancers Need To Build A Residual Income

By Cash Miller
Dec 15, 2008
For a long time I wasn't all that close to most of my family but as we get older such things tend to become more important to our lives. So over the last couple of years I've made a concerted effort to visit my family whenever possible.

Since then I've been able to get to know my Uncle better than ever before. And it was during my last visit that my Uncle actually gave me some of the best business advice I have ever received. That advice had to do with what it takes to be a freelancer.

You see my Uncle for many years was a successful screen writer for a couple of TV shows back in the 80's and early 90's but when his run ended he took to writing books and sports handicapping.

He actually has run his own successful sports pick service for many years now over the internet. But my lessons come from his books. His most famous book he actually self publishes and wrote about 15 years ago. The information contained within is just as relevant today as it was when he wrote it so it keeps selling.

I've made a couple of trips to go see my Uncle over the past year or so and it seems that every time I visit he's shipping some of these books to someone. He sells the book on his website as well as through Amazon and it seems to do very well.

He also has three other books that are not sports related that he sells on Amazon.com as well. These books don't do as well as the first but they do sell. They are kind of like a train going up hill they just keep plugging along while bringing in a few bucks at a time.

The point to this story is about residual income. Because they just keep selling he has built up a solid residual income. And he doesn't have to do any more work to sell them! Each of these books is over ten years old but they really don't need to be updated.

One of them is actually a joke book that is really pretty funny. Three of the four books he self publishes which means when he needs more he just has to call the printer and the fourth has a publisher that keeps distributing the book and then sends him a check a couple of times a year.

All the work he initially did to write the books has been paying off for him each and every year since they came out. During my last visit we talked a bit about this and he continuously stressed the need for products that you can create yourself and that can make you money over the long haul. There are many such products out there that can be handled in a similar fashion if you take the time to look.

If you are a freelancer or are thinking of becoming one then you need to consider coming up with projects of your own that can earn you a continuous residual income. Because it is always nice to earn money from something you finished years ago.
