Since 1991, and the introduction of the World Wide Web, the online community has grown exponentially. Indeed, it is currently estimated that 1.5 billion people use the Internet globally. Not only has it inherently changed the way individuals interact, but it has revolutionised the business world.

As such, online sales are expected to increase by the end of 2008. And whilst Internet shopping presently accounts for a small proportion of all retail spend, experts believe that this proportion will increase significantly in the future.

The developments in ecommerce have considerably contributed towards this growth. Originally established in the 1970s to allow businesses to send commercial documents electronically, the function of ecommerce has hugely expanded.

Most importantly, it allows businesses and individuals to electronically trade goods and services, without the traditional geographical boundaries. It is believed that ecommerce, which has developed rapidly over the past few years, will continue to grow in significance.

It is becoming increasingly vital therefore, that businesses recognise the value of having a strong web presence.

When creating an Internet profile, however, there are some fundamental considerations. For instance, profit drives a business' success. And, that in order to achieve high sales, you have to reach the right people. In this respect, reputation and relationship management are crucial.

In fact, many now believe that 'social ecommerce' is the way forward. Indeed, you need to really know your customers. They state that effective engagement results from businesses that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of their target audience. So, this may sound obvious, but do you know what people's opinions of your company are, or where your customers 'hang out' online?

It is a fact the consumers are becoming more knowledgeable about the retail marketplace and are not afraid to voice their opinions. Hence, engaging directly with them is a great way to earn support and respect.

One suggestion is to encourage customers to talk about their shopping experiences on your website. This could be in the form of a discussion forum or product feedback. Although there may be criticism, don't shy away from it. In reality, responding positively is a great way to demonstrate your commitment to customers.

In addition, incorporating features like blogs, as well as providing businesses with the tools for online selling, they are great for reaching a wide audience, as well as creating a dialogue with your customers.

Consequently, by understanding how to effectively engage people, either through your own website or with the help of established 'virtual' communities, you can gain the tools to successfully embrace the online world!
