How To Save Electricity - Step By Step -

By Ben Levanger

Saving Electricity is a trendy question. Energy preserves a public resource; here are some ways to reduce energy costs without cramping your lifestyle too much. The first way is youre heating and cooling.

Make sure your filters are clean. Check with the manufacturer of your equipment to see if filters on your units need to be cleaned. I know that my filters were almost black when I changed them, I had never even thought to look at the filters before. After I had changed them I noticed that my furnace was probably running 60% less. Also the air filters only cost a couple dollars and can be purchased at lowes or home depot, and are very easy to install. Avoid heating or cooling when no one is home. If youre gone for more than a half an hour, you can turn your heating or cooling down. Don't turn off the heat in cold weather because that can result in the pipes breaking.

You can also lower the temperature of your house, going from 72 degrees to 69 can save a lot of money, and once you are used to it you dont even notice the difference.

In the summer open your windows in the morning to let the cool air in, and then close them around noon or when ever it starts to get hot outside.

You can change all your light bulbs in your house to high efficiency light bulbs, if you want to go a step further you can have dimmers installed and then dim your lights while you are home, they call it living in the dim. It can also help to reduce the cost of living.

Have a contractor come out and seal and leakage your house might have. Air loss accounts for 30% of your heating and cooling cost. They can usually get the work done in a few days and for not very much money.

If you have really old aluminum windows you can have those upgraded to new vinyl windows which are very energy efficient.

You can install solar panels on your house which will help reduce your cost.

If you live in a place where there is a lot of wind, you can install a windmill to help reduce the cost, both the solar panels and the windmills are economical options, that only cost in the hundred to get up and running. I have seen some guides getting systems installed for under 150 dollars.
