The Excitement of Star Trek Continues in 2009
The 2009 release of the new Star Trek movie is simply titled "Star Trek" and is implementing an entirely new cast. Movie trailers available on the Internet outline a look into Captain Kirk's past and how his life went from being a carefree child to the captain of a Starfleet Starship. An entirely new cast is expected to bring a new life to the original characters all "trekkies" know and love. New cast members include Chris Pine as a young Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Eric Bana as Nero and Simon Pegg as the beloved Chief Engineer, Scotty.
Movies and Television History
The very first Star Trek television show debuted on September 8, 1966 on the NBC network. Originally the show was centered on the captain, crew and a five-year exploration mission. During the opening credits, the phrase "to boldly go where no man has gone before" caught the attention of skeptics world-wide. The show was first met with disdain in many areas, but soon won the hearts of millions of viewers.
William Shatner, as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock captured the attention of television viewers for a mere three years. The show's last episode aired on June 3, 1969. Reruns became popular and are often credited for today's super-following and "trekkies" everywhere. Classic Star Trek, or Star Trek: The Original Series, is still as beloved today as it was in the late 1960s.
Several television series surrounding the Star Trek theme and name have been created over the years. Each show has been nominated or won its share of awards including the Peabody Award and the Golden Globe Award. Some of the most loved series include:
Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on September 28, 1987 to an estimated 27 million viewers. During the show's seven seasons, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, captained the Starship Enterprise.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine debuted in January 1993. DS9 was set almost entirely on board a space station instead of a starship. Captain Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks, saw the station through many fights with the Cardassians and other races.
Star Trek: Voyager ran from 1995 to 2001. Voyager was an explorer class ship captained by the only female captain the series has ever featured. Captain Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew, captured the hearts of every Star Trek: Voyager fan and added a much-needed female persona to the show. The introduction of a female Starfleet Captain increased the popularity of Star Trek among the female population of human television viewers.
Star Trek: Enterprise, or just Enterprise, debuted on September 26, 2001. Enterprise was captained by Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer and immediately developed a devoted following of "trekkies" of all ages.
