California's Green Chemistry: It's Effect On Water Restoration And Conservation
Water restoration projects are still in the works in California. In the recent years, water contamination has been evident in different counties in this state. These cases were in different degrees and were caused by a number of reasons. Water contamination has resulted in the contamination of household drinking water and the poison of water life forms: fish and plants. In addition, water contamination resulted into a negative chain reaction that affected the ecosystem the contaminated water. It affected vegetation and wild life that considered the body of water to be their main source of nutrients.
During the water restoration projects in affected California counties, most water contaminations were found to have been caused by chemical pollution from common household products that were either intentionally or unintentionally disposed in water. Some were also caused by unintentional spills of industrial chemicals in transits.
The Need for a Green Chemistry Bil: In the past few years, water restoration projects also included efforts in abolishing the use of chemicals that have contaminated California waters. In line with this, bill after bill have been passed to abolish or regulate certain chemicals. During that time, harmful chemicals were addressed to on a single basis however, they were only known as harmful when there were cases of contamination. This error was corrected recently when the state became the first to enact a Green Chemistry bill which will cover all types of chemicals used in production.
What the Bill Will Cover: Apart from the production process, the Green Chemistry bill of California covers the lifecycle of all manufactured household and non-household products. This bill will also examine the chemicals that may be released while the product is in use and when they are disposed. While this bill is in effect, water restoration projects may not be needed in the future. The community of California will be looking at a more greener and cleaner air and water.
In addition, the bill will also cover research and recommendation of possible alternatives to identified harmful chemicals. Alternatives will not only be environmentally friendly but will also be exposed to non-toxic industrial processes as well. The overall goal of this bill is to produce safe and environment friendly products.
Implementation of the Green Chemistry Bill: The Green Chemistry bill will be spearheaded by California's Department of Toxic Substances Control. This department has had previous success in pollution prevention and water restoration in different cases in California. However, the department will not be alone in implementing this bill. They will form partnerships with other agencies such as the California Environmental Protection Agency.
The Green Chemistry bill may be the one solution that water restoration advocates are looking for. It has been a common procedure in a cleanup, restoration or any problem solving to stop the source first and this bill does that. The source of water contamination cases in California are mainly from harmful chemicals unintentionally deposited in the water. Simply said, there will be no water restoration projects when the chemicals that caused them are regulated, if not entirely abolished.
