1: STYLE IS KEY

Changing windows can completely change how your house looks, so rather than just replacing windows with replicas, look for window's that fit your personal style, as well as, the style of your home. Consider mutins or grids on a window to give your house a period look. Double hung windows will give you a traditional style while horizontal slider and awning windows are more modern design.

2: SAFETY AND SOUND FIRST

Once you find your style, check out the window for security and noise. For anyone who lives near a busy street, think about windows with laminated glass. Laminated glass will reduce noise transmission and will hold up in extreme weather conditions. However, this alternative is considerably more expensive than a basic window.

3: MAINTENANCE

How much maintenance do you want to do on your windows long term? Instead of wood, consider no-hassle vinyl framed windows or hybrid cladding. Especially, if you have a fast-paced life with little time for household chores. Make sure to ask about cracking, warping and rotting. Does your choice of windows need repainting? If you have a multi-story home with windows that are hard to reach, think about double-hung windows for ease of cleaning.

4: ABOUT THE GLASS

Options include tempered impact glass, low-e glass that limits UV rays and glass that reduces heat loss while letting heat from sun to penetrate. Energy Star compliant windows enhance energy efficiency and make the house more comfortable. Some windows allow for better ventilation and others have a larger glass area allowing for more daylight or to capture the views. Also consider transoms or sidelights.

5: PRICE CHECK

Generally, the choice of glass and material used in the frame determine the price. Quality windows are available in all price levels. Make sure to double check the price against other windows you have looked at.

6: FRESH OPENINGS

Should your windows open for ventilation? Or stay closed to prevent energy loss? Do you have privacy issues to consider? How many windows do you need? And finally, measure the size of your rough openings.
