Deep Creek Lake: Maryland's Best Kept Natural Resource

By Samson Paulotti

Most city dwellers from Baltimore find it a good respite from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life to go to the countryside and enjoy Maryland's natural resources. Driving through the Interstate 68, city dwellers could enjoy a three-hour, enjoyable drive to Garrett County, with the smooth anticipation of enjoying one of seven recreational lakes. Spending a few days in one of Maryland's best kept natural resource, Deep Creek Lake State Park, would be a relaxing contrast to the congested concrete jungle they have left behind.

Most people come to Deep Creek Lake for a chance to swim in this awesome Maryland attraction. Diving in the cool and refreshing mountain lake waters, lounging on the beach and playing on the sand would be a great alternative to taking long and cumbersome trips to the ocean. Crossing the lake by boat would be quite an exhilarating experience, with local marinas offering rentals allowing magnificent trips to lakeside resorts where you could sample sumptuous meals and enjoy wonderful shopping. If you are a fishing fanatic, then delving into this lake's aquatic resources is one of the best you'll ever get in Maryland. Anglers have flocked to this sanctuary, deeply engrossed in their sport that the rains, the wind or the snow could not interrupt. Evenings and cold summer nights could also be an enjoyable outdoor experience due to the seemingly convenient absence of mosquitoes.

Lying just outside the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, the park derived its name from a hydroelectric plant project on Deep Creek constructed by the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company in the 1920's. This Maryland resource has a long history dating back to the age of early nomadic hunters, thousands of years back. Native American hunters dwelt in these mountains for centuries until early western settlers arrived in the 1700's, attracted by the rich natural resources of this untouched paradise.

The mountains of Deep Creek, Maryland remained pristine until the early 1900's where uncontrolled logging almost stripped the land of its rich resources of spruce, hemlock, pine and yellow birch. Coal was soon discovered which established the Brant coal mine which produced bituminous coal that was used by the local community for heating and blacksmith work.

Over the years, forest restoration work in Maryland regenerated much of the trees in the hardwood forests where 95% was almost destroyed during the logging spree. With oaks and hickories forming a new habitat, wildlife eventually returned with several species growing in numbers including black bears, wild turkey, bobcats, white-tailed deer and even great packs of squirrel, chipmunks, raccoons, skunks and opossums. Alongside the regenerated trees, different species of plant life also emerged in the forest, some of which are rare.

As part of the Department of Natural Resources' efforts in preserving Maryland's natural resources, the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center was established. This environmental center provides people from all walks of life a hands-on exhibit educating people of the plants and animal wildlife in the area, including a presentation of Maryland's rich cultural and historical heritage. People would come to know how Deep Creek Lake was transformed from a former coal mining and logging community which almost stripped the land bare of its resources, into a bustling year-round vacation destination.

If you want to get out of the congested city life, head on to Deep Creek Lake anytime of the year and enjoy all the adventure and relaxing amenities that awaits you in this American paradise.
