How to Treat a Prescription Drug Addict

Aug 17, 2007
The easy availability of drugs at stores makes people neglect consultation from a doctor when they are ailing from recurrent symptoms of diseases. Unless the problem culminates into a serious outcome due to over use of drug they do not seek expert advice. If anyone thinks that consulting a doctor creates a hole in the pocket and wastes time then they are proven wrong when they have to pay through their noses, thanks to the side effects they suffer later.

Is Hospitalization Needed
The treatment at rehabilitation centers having modern equipments, psychiatrist and medical personnel belonging to various fields helps in recovery of addicts as such institutes have access to all things under one roof. However some may find this type of inpatient hospitalization very costly. Under such circumstances the addicted patient may take treatment on an out patient basis.

The de-addiction consumes lot of time and energy because many sessions are required to get the result of removal of addiction symptoms, also including positive thinking and good health. Hence patience and family support is the main stem of the entire de-addiction schedule.

The De-Addiction Treatment Overview
The detox method is under taken for de addiction by some physician on an out patient basis before referring the patient to the rehabilitation center. This includes introduction of certain drugs which can counter the effect of the addicted drugs. The replacement drugs which have lesser addiction properties like methadone, naloxone etc are also given to the drug addicts to curb the addiction.

In some patients, the method of tapering of doses of prescribed drug is used to prevent sudden development of withdrawal symptoms. This is useful in the patients who have developed tolerance to the dosage and are unable to sustain the sudden withdrawal of drugs.

Mind relaxing techniques should be developed to keep the patient away from depressing thoughts. Even the physical dependency is so much that a control over the mind is required to prevent the patient from taking a 'U' turn.

Counseling techniques help put a full stop to addiction because such addicts are involved at an emotional plane. The draining of persistent bad thoughts and insertion of positive thoughts help the patient from withdrawing from the addiction. Also patient who have a tendency to relapse gain lot of mental grit by regular counseling.

As a cautious citizen we should avoid self treatment for any reason because half knowledge is always dangerous.
