What You Should Know About Drug Testing

Aug 17, 2007
Addiction to various drugs has made the screening of addicts a cumbersome process. The testing for various drug addictions can now be undertaken by the use of kits which are readily available in the market. This helps to segregate the addicts from others and thus facilitates the medical intervention at the earliest. When the addiction is detected at the earlier stages the response to the treatment is also fast and bereft of complication.

The drug testing is a method devised to recognize the toxins produced after intake of drugs. This is done on the saliva, urine, hair, blood and other reagents.

Who gains the most from the test kit?

- Every individual and organization gets to gain from the use of test kit because it is a safer and easier approach for detection of addiction.

- These kits are helpful to those who doubt the integrity of their kith and kin.

- Also it is useful for institutes and organization to screen their employees before and after recruitment. Sometimes random testing is done on employees when there is a doubt on the efficiency of certain workers.

- It is helpful for screening sports personnel and people involved in competitive fields as usually in their quest to gain fame and create records they consume drugs.

- Teenagers and children should be subjected to such tests because at any vulnerable time they may start taking drugs due to peer pressure or for fun.
How the testing is done
In the drug abusers system the active ingredient of the drug produces metabolites which is excreted via the discharges thus the addiction becomes known on examination. For example in cannabis addiction the active principle THC ( tetrahydrocannabinol) is detected by using the urine kit. As the kit comes with instruction for its use the test can be conducted by following the same. The urine test kit is commonly used for all practical purpose. But nowadays the availability of various detoxifying drugs which mask the symptoms of addiction has made people to go for hair follicle testing. This is an expensive type of testing. The results from this testing is dependable as the medicines which are available for masking symptoms are unable to effect the hair follicles.

Medically drug addiction is defined as 'A state of periodic or chronic intoxication caused by repeated use of natural or synthetic drug'. This type of addiction is a set back for the individual and the society. Our economy is affected due to such habits and dependence. The dependence can be of a physical or mental in nature. What begins as a fun trip to the world of pleasure eventually becomes a bane. Temptation is a basic trait of teenage. When we come across fashionable item our first desire is to posses it. On a similar ground we get provoked while watching others enjoy the bliss of stimulating drugs.

We should lend a helping hand to eradicate drug addiction instead of masking it to secure the future of the new generation.
