Finding a Cheap Fax Service

By Steve Cagney
Dec 31, 2008
With the onset of Voice Over IP, many people have switched to the digital phone technology to save costs over their traditional land line service. Voice Over IP offers the standard phone features including others you can't find on a regular phone service plan. One item however that is lost when switching is the ability to send and receive faxes. Fax technology just doesn't work over VoIP. If you are wanting to switch but still need to be able to send and receive faxes, then why not try a cheap fax service.

Internet fax services allow you to send and receive faxes using your home computer. Essentially you send an email to a particular email address with the information that you want to fax in the body of the email. That email is received by the service provider when then turns it into a facsimile sent to the correct party. Most service providers give you your own local or toll free number that you can use as your dedicated fax number. Receiving facsimiles is just as easy. They are sent directly to your email once someone uses your personal number to send one.

Since this technology uses email you can literally send faxes via your cell phone if it has email capability. This is great when you are on the go and need to get something sent out. Some fax services are also allowing you to send attachments as part of the email. The service reads those attachments (such as PDF, word, powerpoint, etc.) and adds them as another page in the facsimile being sent out.

There are many business level internet fax service providers out there like eFax, Jfax and Send2Fax. Their plans offer a certain number of faxes for a monthly fee. These fees tend to be higher since they are more focused around business level needs. If you only need a personal level service so you can switch to Voice Over IP, select a service with a lower monthly fee and number of faxes like SaveOnFaxes. These personal level providers still usually offer a free dedicated phone number that you can use to give out as your number. Some even include a toll free number at no extra cost over their monthly subscription fee.

Don't let a lack of faxing keep you from paying high bills to the local phone company. An internet fax service is a cheap and easy way to keep facsimile capability for your home or office while still saving money on local phone service
