How To Choose The Right Vacuum Cleaner For Your Home

By Ray La Foy

Are you sick and tired of your old vacuum cleaner, and ready to purchase one that will suit your needs long term? If vacuums seem like very disposable appliances your replace very 2 or 3 years, it could be you're not purchasing the right vacuum for your home.

Maybe your home is simply too large or your cleaning demands are too heavy for the type of vacuum you last purchased. It could also be you are buying a vacuum with insufficient power for your type of carpet or usage demands. Perhaps you keep buying a cheap brand of vacuum when investing in a better one would be a smarter choice.

Whatever the reason you need a new vacuum, make this purchase one that will last long term. Start by setting a realistic budget, and accept that you may need to spend a bit more than the cost of the cheapest vacuum you can find if you want it to last long term.

You don't have to spend a fortune to own the best vacuum for your needs, but you probably don't want to purchase the lowest end model possible, either, unless you have very light carpet cleaning needs in your home.

In addition to setting your budget, you should consider the type of flooring your home predominately features. Do you have mostly carpeting, hard surface floors, or an equal amount of both? If you have predominately hard surface flooring, you'll want a power broom or floor sweeper that works on hard floors much like a broom you sweep. The advantage is, these upright floor sweepers operate like a vacuum, so dirt and debris are sucked up automatically without the need for a dust pan.

Floor sweepers or stick vacs work great on hardwood floors, tiles, linoleum and other hard surface floors, but they aren't very effective on carpeting. If you have both hard surface floors and carpeting, you may need to invest in both a regular upright as well as a stick vacuum. If you have only a few carpets or area rugs and mostly hard surface floors, a stick vacuum may be all you need.

For homes that feature a lot of carpeting, you'll need a powerful upright vacuum cleaner to keep your floors clear of dirt, dust, allergens, pet hair and other debris. You probably know whether or not you prefer bagless vacuums or those that require bag replacements. Another thing to consider is HEPA filtration, which can be a big help to those who suffer from allergies.

Unless you plan to invest in a hand held vacuum, too, choose an upright with ample attachments for cleaning curtains, stairs and furniture. As basic as it sounds, you'll also want a vacuum with an easy release cord of ample length.

You can read reviews of various upright vacuums online to find out how well a particular vacuum performs. Pay attention to warranties and return policies when you make your purchase. Ideally, you'll want the option of returning your new upright vacuum cleaner if it doesn't perform well in your home. Vacuums that come with lengthy warranties may suggest better performance, as well.
