Water Removal After A Flood

By James Farkenfur

The rainy season brings about possible disasters such as typhoons, flooding, and erosion. The hardest hit in a home when flooded is the basement because it is a lowest point. Other areas in the home may be affected by water as well, should rains enter your home from a broken window or door during a typhoon. Furniture may be damaged but if you as a homeowner know what to do, you may be able to save your possessions. So what does water removal entail?

Water removal starts by draining the water out your home. You can pump the water out using a sump pump. Just make sure that you hook up the sump pump to a longer hose if there is no nearby drainage area such as a window or a door. If you are pumping a basement, this is highly probable since usually this is an enclosed area. You may opt to use a wet vacuum which has its own storage facility. Only, you have to drain the water out as well should the storage receptacle becomes full.

If the water does not dissipate even after pumping, it means that the flood outside your home has not gone down yet and will continue to flood your home. Wait for the flood outside to dissipate before water removal.

Disinfecting is the next step in water removal procedure. You can get chlorine bleach from the local supermarket. Use this to kill microbes in the affected area. Leave the bleach on the affected area to dry.

Next step in water removal is to ensure that the affected area is cleaned well. Wash with cleanser and clean water. Wipe clean and dehumidify by putting on a dehumidifier. Remember to close the area down when dehumidifying. If you do not have a dehumidifier, you can dry the area by bringing in an electric fan and letting air in.

Water removal also entails that you make sure that food in your kitchen is free from the microbes that may have been brought in by the flood. Throw food that may have been affected. Wash the utensils and sterilize in boiling water. Throw away wooden gadgets such as chopping boards.

Prevent mold and mildew by ensuring your home is free from moisture after a flood. As soon as you can after a flood, start the water removal process. The sooner you can do so, the faster you can prevent possible damage to your home and health risk to your family members.
