Ceiling Fans Make Decorating A Breeze
Ceiling fans are classy additions to any room's decorative scheme. Besides the obvious benefit of providing improved airflow, they look great and add a touch of sophistication. The biggest decision is what kind of fans should you get for certain types of rooms? Here are some ideas to help you choose wisely.
Ceiling fans have certainly come a long way. In old movies they are most often seen stirring the air of smoky newsrooms and bars, or spinning lazily in a vain attempt to alleviate the heat of an African cabana or overcrowded southern courtroom. They were certainly never seen in regular people's homes: how times have changed! Such fans have become must-have fixtures in houses across America in recent years.
The great thing about today's fans is that they come in such a wide variety of styles, colors and sizes. Many professional decorators include them in their overall scheme for a room, and consider them to be as important as the lighting. Their beauty and function make them a great addition just about anywhere in a house. Their styles range from Tiffany to modern to Tropical-African. The trick is to find the perfect match of style and size.
There is no real cut and dried rule about fan size versus room size. A lot of the decision process is common sense: you wouldn't want to put a low hanging fan in a room with low ceilings, for instance. A lot of the deciding depends on whether you want to emphasize either form or function.
It might be tempting to put a huge 56" fan in a large room with high ceilings. It would look great, of course. But if you really need to improve air flow and cool the room, such a fan would not do the job because such large blades actually move less air than smaller ones. A better solution would be to have two normal sized fans instead.
You don't necessarily have to match blade wood and shade to your furniture. In fact, such a technique often detracts from the look of a room. If you hang a dark fan from a normal height ceiling, it will "feel" as if its blades might hit your head! Dramatic furniture and other decorative touches don't need extra help from the fan to make the room look terrific. It would be better in this case to select a white fan which would blend inconspicuously into the ceiling.
There are plenty of styles and sizes of fans to choose from. If you are not sure what might be best for you, consult a professional who is experienced and will help you make the right decisions to suit your lifestyle, budget, decorating scheme, and cooling needs. Whatever you choose, you are sure to add a touch of class and value to your home.
