Not All Ceiling Fans Are Created Equal: Go For Quality
Relatively inexpensive ceiling fans can be purchased at just about any home improvement warehouse store. Unfortunately, you may find yourself stuck with an inferior product that breaks down prematurely or doesn't operate the way you would like to. Not all ceiling fans are created equal: know the facts.
Ceiling fans may look very similar on the outside, but as with just about everything, it's what's inside that matters most. Manufacturers who sell to discounters often scrimp on some of the most important parts of the fan.
Rubber cushions are vital because, like a muffler to a car, they are essential to keeping the fan running with as little noise as possible. Without this padding, the grinding together of metal components creates noise, which reverberates into the ceiling and becomes practically unbearable as it gets worse. Leaving out this type of basic engineering is a cost reduction measure, of course. But if you get stuck with such fan in an attempt to save a little money, you will never want to use it.
Obtaining replacement parts for warehouse products is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Unfortunately, the cheapness of the parts practically guarantees that you will need to replace something eventually! The most commonly defective part is the pull chain, because it is used so often. Good luck finding a replacement if this happens with your inexpensive fan: chances are you'll have to buy a whole new one.
In another attempt to save money, inexpensive fan manufacturers may choose to put surplus motors in wrong sized fixtures, which may lead to overheating or some other type of breakdown. Even though the fan may look just the same as a better-made counterpart on the outside, its poorly engineered and inadequate insides will shorten its life span considerably.
All of this simply goes to show that you may very well get what you pay for when selecting the ceiling fans which grace your home.
Most folks don't install fans for purely cosmetic reasons: they also depend on them to help keep their house cool in the summers and to better circulate heated air in the winters. How a fan is made on the inside, therefore, definitely matters. You want a fan with a dependable and high quality motor, the appropriate parts to muffle sound and limit vibrations, and a guarantee of being able to replace parts if necessary.
Saving a few dollars up front is not worth the headaches caused by problems down the road.
