Grinding Your Own Wheat Flour
When thinking about our plans for the day, grinding our own flour probably doesn't come to mind. With full time jobs, children, hobbies, after school activities, and eventually sleep there's just not enough time to worry about where our staples are going to come from, especially when we can just head to our local market and grab flour that's ready to use.
There are some important facts you should know about flour. What if we told you that after only a few days, over seventy percent of wheat that's been ground into flour looses it's vitamins? What about the fact that when the bran and germ are removed from processed wheat you loose must of the nutrients? Or that white flour is made white by chemically bleaching it? I hope knowing these things would help convince you consider grinding your own flour. It much healthier and the taste is delicious. Imagine a loaf of bread that's been baked using your own flour. And that's just one reason to head out and purchase a grinder.
The first step towards grinding your own flour is to purchase a grinder; you can either stick to the basics with a hand grain mill; they are less expensive, and can be used as an educational tool as well; your kids can learn to appreciate the origins of their toast, and oatmeal all while getting a bit of exercise!
When purchasing a grinder, keep a few things in mind; how often are you going to be grinding your own wheat? How many people will you be feeding? What's your budget, and your space like? The typical wheat grinder can run from fifty, to over two hundred dollars, so make sure you do your research before heading out to purchase one. Some companies also offer grinder attachments, which can hook on to your mixing bowls, and other devices....if you're not sure whether you're going to be grinding full time, this may be a better product to purchase.
When you grind your own wheat flour, you will need to keep it stored in a cool, airtight container. Fresh ground wheat can loose nutrients, and flavor after only forty-eight hours, so your best bet is to grind only what you will be using in the next day or two. You can grind a lot of things in our grinder - beans, pasta, oats and many more which means that you can use it for a variety of simple, homemade things.
